Sonnet 76 – Everything I Never Wanted

You were everything I never wanted.
I was looking for an older woman,
wiser than girls in the ways that mattered
so to a foolish and hungry young man.

I wanted someone more intelligent,
a woman without the obligation
of children or the need for them. I meant
to be the center of her attention,

the answer to all her need. Instead, I
found and fell for you – young, the mother of
two small children. You were smarter, though; by
taking me into your world, teaching me love

on a larger scale, you freed me, released
me to learn what I wanted most meant least.
